About This Book
A bourgeois household is unsettled when one son receives an unexpected legacy from a family acquaintance, prompting his elder brother to suspect that the younger might be the result of a concealed liaison. The elder's mounting jealousy and determined inquiry into family affairs gradually destroy domestic trust, bring hidden relationships to light, and generate intense social and psychological strain. The narrative follows the slow collapse of confidence and the characters' differing responses to honor, reputation, and identity as suspicion reshapes their lives and relations.
