Out of a Labyrinth

A city detective arrives in an isolated farming township to investigate the disappearances of two young women and chronicles methodical inquiries, wide searches, and the spread of alarm among close-knit neighbors. The investigation uncovers a web of local crime—burglary, counterfeiting, and an assassin's trail—and brings the investigator into conflict with secretive residents, an energetic operative named Jim Long, uneasy witnesses, and episodes of mob law and vigilantism. The narrative alternates procedural detection with rural drama as scattered clues, confessions, and rivalries are followed to a final gathering of evidence and resolution.
