About This Book
The narrative follows Lady Elizabeth Carlyon, nicknamed Betty, as she navigates romantic entanglements, social proprieties, and adventurous incidents involving Major d'Arcy, Sergeant Zebedee Tring, and a cast of neighbours and suitors. Episodes range from witty domestic scenes and flirtation to suspenseful encounters with poachers, highwaymen, apparitions at a haunted mill, duels, conspiracies and a trial of loyalties. Comic mishaps, mistaken identities, and genteel repartee alternate with moments of courage and sacrifice, and various minor plots converge toward reconciliations and reckonings among the principal characters.
