About This Book
A series of short tales follows a devout, physically impaired elder called Ontrei and his younger companion as they traverse wild northern landscapes. The episodes blend travel scenes, homiletic reflections and vivid atmosphere: pilgrimage to a renowned monastery, a dream by a lakeside fire, encounters with poet-singers, folk magic and pagan beliefs, and darker incidents including a murder island. The prose shifts between plain dialogue, moral teaching and lyrical descriptions of stormy forests and humble villages, examining faith, perseverance and the uneasy coexistence of Christian piety with older local customs.
