On the Sweeny wire

The story follows Belle Sweeny, a race-track gambler's widow living on a party telephone line, who habitually eavesdrops on neighbors and becomes entangled in gossip and suspicion after a telephone inspector's visit and a quarrel involving a man called Mike. Recollections of her late husband's disputes, an introduction to a saloonkeeper named Doyle, and mocking phone calls reveal strained loyalties and hint at theft of the couple's bankroll. The narrative examines how idle curiosity, neighborhood rumor, and small betrayals escalate into danger for ordinary people.
