About This Book
The narrative opens in a dark Burgundian forest where robbers attack a carriage, kill a traveler and his coachman, and discover an infant among the luggage; after a tense debate the braconnier Favier takes the child while accomplices conceal the bodies and abandon the vehicle. Later passages shift to gentler domestic scenes in which the infant is cared for by a nurse and amused by a playful cat, with long evenings and woodland visits sketched in affectionate detail. The work moves between violent incident and quiet caretaking, examining vulnerability, compassion, and the rhythms of rural life.
