Myths of the Rhine

The work collects retellings of Rhine-region legends and northern mythologies, tracing religious practices from primitive tree and spirit worship through druidic rites to Norse cosmology. It presents episodes about sacred trees, oracles, deities and their exploits, biographical sketches of gods, mythic origins including world-creation narratives, and the fate of the gods at the twilight of the world. Interwoven are comparative observations linking Celtic and Scandinavian motifs to Indo-European sources, discussions of philology and chronology, and reflections on ritual and belief. The text is organized into thematic chapters and complemented by dramatic engravings.
