About This Book
A small naval crew operates beneath polar ice, preparing a custom minisub and sending a hard-bitten diver, nicknamed Murderer, on dangerous underwater tasks as picket buoys mysteriously fail. The sailors trade stories of the diver's lethal encounters with enormous sea creatures and risky Arctic exploits while technicians and officers manage cramped, air-conditioned submarine routines. Action sequences of dives and mechanical repairs alternate with uneasy reflections on tools of destruction when the group confronts the specter of atomic weapons and the long-term hazards of radioactivity, undercutting bravado with concern about human and ecological vulnerability beneath the ice.
