About This Book
A magical two-act play depicts a clash between virtuous forces and a malign demon after a kingdom demolishes the demon's temple and consecrates a Temple of Virtue. Courtly ceremony, battlefield victory, and popular rejoicing contrast with stormy omens as the demon's shadows and servants enact revenge, drawing rulers, spirits, and common folk into enchantments, trials, and comic incidents. The action moves between an orientalized royal court, supernatural realms of dreams and shadows, and rustic scenes, combining moral allegory, romantic and comic subplots, and imaginative spectacle to examine virtue, temptation, and the precarious balance between human desires and otherworldly powers.
