Messenger No. 48

The narrative follows a resourceful street messenger boy, Jet, who secures work at a district station and must support himself amid poverty and precarious employment. When a wealthy merchant is found murdered and his safe emptied, Jet becomes entangled with men connected to the crime and with the detectives on the case. He pursues clues by traveling with a minstrel troupe, confronting kidnappers, enduring arrests and jail, and taking part in chases, rescues, and reconnaissance across towns and the Adirondacks. The episodic chapters build through captures, bold attempts, and a climactic recognition and struggle that resolve the mystery.
