Medieval Europe

The work surveys Western Europe from the collapse of imperial authority through the establishment and breakup of successor kingdoms, treating the rise of regional lordship and feudal institutions, the evolution of monarchy and the Church including reforming papal movements, the organization of medieval states and social orders, the outward expansion represented by crusading and colonization, and the economic and civic revival embodied by the growth of towns. It combines chronological narrative with thematic chapters on political structures, feudal relations, ecclesiastical power, and urban and military expansion, and includes maps and bibliographic notes to clarify territorial changes.
