Divine silence and the fading force of ritual provoke a crisis of faith: priests lament, people laugh, and a rebellious celestial being resolves to incarnate as mortal to test love, action, and redemption. He transforms and descends amid vivid seasonal and mountain imagery, declaring a mission to rouse human thought and contest the authority of heaven. On the Caucasus he encounters a titan who first dissuades him and then listens as the stranger prepares his tale. The narrative alternates dramatic episodes and reflective passages, addressing critics and exploring themes of artistic vocation, freedom, struggle, and the possibility of human salvation through love and deeds.
