A narrator relays an experienced hunter’s account of a hazardous African trading journey and an ensuing exploration into fever-haunted interior. The hunter discovers an apparently abandoned kraal where many lie dead and rescues a single surviving old woman, then describes the landscape, sickness, and hardships that follow. He and two companions undertake a daring quest after rumours of a secluded white people on remote highlands, enduring privation and peril as clues accumulate and hope alternates with foreboding. The tale closes in uncertainty as the expedition presses deeper into uncharted country and ultimately disappears from contact.
