About This Book
A circle of poor young artists in Paris share boisterous camaraderie, scarce resources, and creative ambition across four acts. A poet encounters a frail seamstress and their tender courtship unfolds amid the friends' lively gatherings, quarrels, and small triumphs. Jealousy and illness strain the lovers' bond, prompting separations and fragile reconciliations as seasons pass. The score and ensemble scenes alternate exhilaration and hardship to portray bohemian life. In the final act the community rallies to care for the dying seamstress while the poet mourns her, bringing the story to a quiet, tragic close.
