About This Book
A roguish, self-indulgent knight attempts to ingratiate himself with two married women in order to secure money and favors; when they discover his designs they ally to expose and ridicule him through staged encounters and disguises. Parallel comic strands involve romantic entanglements among young lovers, a vain suitor, officious local notables, and a band of rascals whose schemes entangle and exacerbate misunderstandings. The play uses fast-paced farce, wordplay, and practical jokes to satirize vanity, sexual hypocrisy, and social pretension, while celebrating domestic solidarity, wit, and the corrective power of communal laughter.
