About This Book
A shipwreck separates twin siblings, leaving the sister to assume a male identity and enter the service of a lovelorn noble. She becomes the intermediary in courtship that misfires: the noble sends her to woo a grieving countess, who falls for the disguised sister while the sister herself loves the noble. A comic subplot centres on pranksters who trick an officious steward into humiliating behavior through a forged letter. Mistaken identities, a surprising reappearance of the brother, and unmasked disguises lead to multiple marriages and a closing mixture of festive gaiety and bittersweet reflection on desire, social ambition, and gender roles.
