About This Book
The narrative follows a young seaman who, after a prosperous voyage, is betrayed by rivals, falsely accused and imprisoned in an island fortress. During long captivity he befriends an erudite fellow prisoner who transmits secret knowledge and reveals a hidden fortune. After escaping, he secures the treasure on a remote island, adopts a new aristocratic identity, and uses wealth and cunning to reward allies and punish enemies. The story traces his transformation, explores themes of justice, revenge, mercy, social hypocrisy, and the moral consequences of retribution while alternating action, travel, intimate domestic scenes, and courtroom and prison episodes.
