About This Book
An interstellar explorer returns to a green-lit, far-future Earth to visit an archaeologist who has unearthed a sealed metallic cache containing models, artworks, and hundreds of metal-bound books with pictorial keys. Together they piece together the makers' advance from animalism to early atomic power and tentative spaceflight, and consider the cache as an intended message to later ages. The archaeologist surveys hypotheses for the species' disappearance — vast geological time, occupation of different ecological zones, atomic catastrophe, and a gradual cultural debasement that reduces complex artifacts to primitive tools — while the explorer expresses yearning for contact and hope of survival beyond Earth.
