About This Book
A sharp one-act comedy follows a cunning physician who, together with a complicit apothecary, takes out an insurance stake on a hale peasant and then adjusts medical care to maximize the chance of collecting the payout. Their schemes and banter reveal professional hypocrisy and mutual self-interest while other visitors to the doctor’s house underscore social opportunism. The action stays largely in a single domestic setting and uses satirical exaggeration and brisk exchanges to expose the commercialization of health, the moral compromises of those who profit from others, and the absurdity of speculative arrangements dressed as sensible practice.
