About This Book
During a violent popular uprising in Naples, the chevalier San-Felice witnesses the mutilation of the royal courier Ferrari and confronts a hostile crowd while domestic and political crises collide. The royal family and their allies hasten preparations to embark for safety, and San-Felice accepts an urgent duty to accompany the prince, bringing private anxieties into contact with public fury. A local captain intervenes to protect the chevalier from mob violence, and episodes alternate between street atrocities, court decisions, and intimate reactions, examining honor, loyalty, and the fragility of authority amid mass unrest.
