The tales present brief tableaux: a girl on a river bearing a lamp while hoping for a beloved's survival, a child seeking forgiveness from a mother hen, a dying woman displayed by a harsh landlord, a local theatre performance seen from open windows, and an elderly visitor kneeling before an empty throne room. These varied vignettes dwell on small acts of devotion, humiliation, loss, and fleeting beauty. The collected pieces form an unordered, picturelike gallery of ordinary lives observed across different places and moods.
