Kuvaelmia itä-suomalaisten vanhoista tavoista 2: Maahanpanijaiset

The work presents a collection of traditional eastern Finnish practices and observances related to illness, death, funerals and burial rites, blending narrative vignettes with practical ritual instruction. It documents domestic healing methods such as herbal remedies, stimulants, sauna and ritual bathing, and the use of spoken charms, offerings and gestures aimed at placating land and household spirits. It also describes communal responses to impending death, the conduct of wakes and funeral processions, and the procedures for earth-facing burial ceremonies. Organized by topical chapters, the text preserves customary prescriptions, incantatory language and social routines that governed care for the sick and the disposal of the dead.
