Kurjalan Maria

A remote alpine ravine hosts a small fortified chapel built around a revered image of the Virgin found in a crooked pine, attracting summer pilgrims who bring offerings and seek consolation. A valley monastery administers the site, providing a seasonal priest while vendors attend visitors, yet many monks are negligent and the chapel risks abandonment. When older clergy pass away, a young, earnest priest named Emanuel volunteers to serve as the mountain chapel's guardian; he prefers solitude, comforts the suffering, and feels alienated amid the monastery's indifference. Years later a letter reports that he left to continue his ministry as a missionary in Australia.
