About This Book
The poem follows a Lithuanian who, having been raised among a militant religious order, returns to its leadership with the secret aim of undermining it on behalf of his homeland; political maneuvering, a contested election, public festival, and a military campaign escalate toward a moral and tragic climax. Themes include national identity, betrayal as resistance, the personal cost of covert vengeance, and the clash between religious-military institutions and subjugated peoples. The text is composed as an historical narrative in verse, divided into episodic sections that alternate ceremonial scenes, counsel and battle, and a haunting personal reckoning.
