The work traces European exploration across the Pacific, summarizing earlier voyages and the gradual dispelling of the imagined southern continent, then follows three extensive late‑eighteenth‑century expeditions that mapped islands and coasts from Tahiti and other archipelagos to New Zealand and the Australian shore. It combines chronological narrative of sea voyages with descriptive accounts of landscapes, encounters with island inhabitants, navigational hazards and scientific observations, and emphasizes the cartographic and geographic findings produced by those long maritime journeys.
