Ilolaulu Jesuksesta

A devotional poetic cycle renders the life of Jesus in archaic Finnish verse, tracing events from annunciation and birth through childhood, teachings, the ministry and signs, the Last Supper and passion, trials before religious and imperial authorities, crucifixion, death and burial, descent to the dead, resurrection, postresurrection appearances and ascension. Arranged in numbered cantos with a prefatory essay on faith and language, the work blends scriptural episodes, liturgical detail and moral reflection, using simple, direct diction and traditional metrics to address consolation, suffering and redemption.
