It traces stylistic shifts toward Horatian and Italian models, contrasts burlesque and Juvenalian satire, and considers how social conventions and political and inquisitorial pressures curtailed personal invective while fostering other forms such as popular ballads, picaresque narrative, and refined courtly verse.
