Historical Romance of the American Negro

The narrative frames a representative Black woman as its narrator and follows her life from enslavement and a daring escape through the antebellum era, the Civil War, and Reconstruction, weaving personal episodes with accounts of battles, political struggles, and prominent abolitionist and Black leaders. It intersperses scenes of travel, labor, and family life with commentary on civic rights, military service—including participation in the Spanish–American conflict—and the social advances and setbacks faced by Black Americans. The book combines historical sketch, anecdote, and romance to argue for racial dignity and to document community resilience and progress at the turn of the twentieth century.
