A narrative history reconstructs the exile of the royal family and the nobility during the revolutionary decade, following the successive stages of migration, diplomatic negotiations, military attempts at restoration, and life in foreign courts and camps. The author combines published and newly uncovered archival documents to present a chronological account of émigré politics, internal divisions, hopeful plots and costly missteps, as well as the reception by various European powers. Emphasis is placed on rigorous documentation, the complexity of loyalties and the personal and political consequences of exile, while urging impartial assessment of culpability and suffering.
