Haaksirikkoiset

The narrative follows an aging, bankrupt former businessman whose hopes for revival rest on his son's technical studies; after the father's ruin the family is socially ostracized and the son, drawn into youthful excesses, commits forgery and is imprisoned. To spare the father, who suffers a heart condition, the mother and daughter conceal the truth by fabricating letters and maintaining a fiction of progress, a deception that intensifies their guilt and fear. Through a series of linked episodes in a small community, the work examines pride, shame, familial duty, social judgment and the moral burdens of misfortune.
