About This Book
The volume compiles roughly three hundred and fifty Creole proverbs drawn from six dialects, presenting each proverb in the original patois with literal French and English renderings, notes, and a subject index. The editor situates the proverbs with commentary on sources and selection, explains orthographic and pronunciation variants, and offers concise observations on Creole grammar, etymology, and dialectal differences—particularly Louisiana usage. Supplementary material discusses collection methodology, bibliographical references, and reasons for omitting certain items, while local informants and contemporary Creole writers are acknowledged. The whole aims to exhibit the language's structure and expressive range rather than to offer a systematic linguistic treatise.
