The narrative follows Constant Louvet from childhood in a rural village, tracing his curiosity, imaginative attachment to puppetry, fondness for storytelling with his aunt, school success and mechanical inventiveness, and his relationships with peers and a favored companion, Alexandrine Rutel. It sketches village life, local fairs, domestic cooking lore, and youthful aspirations toward technical education, juxtaposing everyday rural routines with moments of performance and fantasy. Through episodic scenes it explores themes of memory, mentorship, community ties, and the gradual formation of identity amid modest means.
