About This Book
A one-handed youth is hired to guard timber leases around a vast swamp and gradually earns a place among a lumber camp while defending wild places and forming an attachment to a mysterious young woman known as the Swamp Angel. Through friendships with the camp manager, a bird-woman who photographs birds, and a kindly household, he confronts timber thieves and other dangers, learns integrity and self-respect, and grows from homeless waif into a protector with a settled home. The narrative blends outdoor adventure and rich natural description with themes of resilience, compassion, and belonging.
