About This Book
An epic poem depicts an aging warrior-king, Fjalar, who after many victories seeks peace and proposes mercy and lawful order, provoking mixed reactions among his veteran retainers. A visiting seer foretells humiliation for the royal house and a shameful union involving the king's children, forcing Fjalar to summon his son and daughter and face a terrible choice; he issues a vow that silences his daughter's name and withdraws. A later song shifts to another court where three brothers contest a maiden's hand and ask their blind father's judgment, placing brotherhood, honor, and the threat of renewed violence at the center.
