Fire Mountain / A Thrilling Sea Story

The narrative follows a restless young office clerk who leaves legal drudgery for life at sea, signing aboard a brig where a colorful crew — including a songful boatswain, an eccentric mate, and a dangerous figure named Wild Bob Carew — shapes his education in seamanship and shipboard codes. Voyages bring fogbound passages, encounters with a smoking volcanic island, quarantine and imprisonment, and an expedition into a treasure cave. Interspersed with sea chanteys and whalemen's lore, the plot moves through deception, capture, and reversal to a final resolution among shipmates and rivals.
