A series of three expeditions across Western Australia and the southern interior are narrated as journals, describing preparations, routes, and day-to-day hardships while searching for a missing earlier explorer, crossing the southern coast from the west to Adelaide, and traversing from the west coast across arid country to the overland telegraph line. The account records encounters with Indigenous people, natural obstacles, discoveries of water and vegetation, and receptions by colonial settlements on arrival. Maps, illustrations, and an appendix offer geological and botanical notes plus statistical material on the colony, supporting the practical and scientific observations made during the journeys.
