About This Book
After a fall at a masquerade leaves a man convinced he is a medieval monarch, his acquaintances construct an elaborate staged court to sustain the illusion, and perform rituals that blur theatricality and lived identity. When attempts are made to restore him to ordinary life, tensions emerge between compassion, manipulation, and self-preservation, as the supposed patient alternates lucidity and role-playing to expose or exploit others. The drama probes the porous boundary between sanity and performance, the masks people adopt, and the ways social roles can harden into a reality stronger than fact.
