About This Book
A biographical portrait traces Elsie Inglis's upbringing, medical training, and two decades of practice, her establishment of a hospice for women and children, and leadership in the constitutional suffrage movement. It follows her organization of Scottish women's wartime hospitals and service with units in Serbia and Russia, including captivity and subsequent release, a challenging retreat, and efforts to evacuate troops and nursing units. Personal recollections, excerpts from an unpublished novel, tributes, and photographs illuminate her character, courage, and the friendships and institutions she helped build until illness ended her work.
