About This Book
The work alternates between an Athenian court dispute over an imposed marriage and the enchantments of a nearby wood where fairy rulers and a mischievous sprite interfere in human affairs. Two young couples become entangled when magical potions cause mistaken attractions, while a troupe of amateur actors prepares a ludicrous tragedy that is later staged for comic effect. Through misunderstandings, magical meddling, and eventual reconciliations, romantic confusions are untangled and marriages are arranged, ending with social order restored and the supernatural realm granting its blessing. Recurring themes include the fickleness of love, the fluid boundary between illusion and reality, and the comic value of theatrical artifice.
