About This Book
A comic tale follows a timid young suitor who, urged by a garrulous family friend to appear bolder, adopts cigarettes, ale and a bluster he does not feel to win a young woman's favor. The woman and her aunt secretly encourage him and plot to teach her curmudgeonly uncle a lesson, setting up rehearsed encounters, misunderstandings and small deceptions that probe propriety and appearances. Humor stems from social awkwardness and the contrast between genteel respectability and performative masculinity, and the episodic scenes mix domestic comedy with a gentle satire of courtship rituals and family influence.
