Domestic folk-lore

This work surveys popular beliefs, customs, and superstitions surrounding domestic life, arranging material by life stages and household topics. It documents birth and infancy practices (lucky days, the caul, changelings, the evil eye), nursery and school lore, courtship and marriage customs, death omens and burial rites, superstitions about the human body and dress, table and furniture omens, household rituals and divination methods, remedies for common ailments, and miscellaneous lore such as charms, witchcraft precautions, second sight, and ghosts. The author collects and classifies regional sayings, rituals, and charms, noting their persistence and variety across social classes.
