About This Book
A young man weary of uniformed service deserts and is recruited by a flashy stage manager to pose as a Zulu performer in a low-priced roadside theatre. Under makeup and costume he learns war dances and songs, burns his uniform, endures gruelling twice-nightly shows and unwanted attentions from a fellow performer, and faces the moral and practical consequences of desertion as he weighs staying for promised success against returning to his old life.
