Der Schwimmer

The narrative follows Franz Felder, born to a large, poor family, whose earliest memories and deepest affinity lie in the water. From childhood playing on the Spree and mastering dives, swimming becomes his consuming talent and refuge amid economic hardship and limited schooling. As he grows, the story traces his technical skill, his belonging with working-class peers, and his entry into organized competition, culminating in membership of a swim club and a race for the city championship. Along the way the text examines devotion to a single art, the shaping influence of environment, and the tensions between daily survival and passionate pursuit.
