About This Book
The narrative follows a one-year volunteer who repeatedly sneaks from his barracks to meet Madelon, their encounters described in rich, jewel-like and sensuous imagery while military routine and punishment frame his longing. Accusations of her infidelity and comrades' scorn escalate the pressure; when soldiers come to arrest him for earlier misconduct he shoots himself. Intercut episodes depict Madelon enduring corporal abuse, episodes of rough camaraderie and reconciliation among men, and a closing sense of oppressive heat. The work contrasts erotic escapism and everyday brutality to show fragile desires overwhelmed by military discipline and social violence.
