Ein unbeholfener, blasser Ritter lebt zurückgezogen und träumt von Nähe. In der Mitternacht erscheint ihm eine schillernde Geliebte in schaumiger Gewandung; sie umarmt ihn, und er wird in einen kristallinen Wasserpalast versetzt, wo Musik, tanzende Jungfrauen und rauschende Glücksgefühle ihn umgeben. Die Verwandlung ebenso wie die Feier lösen sich abrupt, als die Kerzen verlöschen, und er sitzt wieder allein in seiner düsteren Stube.
