The narrative follows Georg Freimann, the proud head of a shipping line, as he confronts postwar upheaval: returning soldier-revolutionaries, Allied oversight, and the forced surrender of his company's last great liner. Public disorder and the loss of professional purpose plunge him into despair, briefly contemplating a desperate act, while his secretary Antje Tietgens observes with compassionate restraint. Administrative maneuvers and personal pride collide as he assembles a commission to salvage what remains, and the story examines the collapse of an established world, conflicting loyalties, and the tension between private anguish and the demands of leadership.
