The work surveys a wide range of Cuban superstitions and witchcraft practices, emphasizing Afro‑Cuban contributions and the blending of Catholic ritual with African cults. It details the Ñañiguismo society, its secret initiation rites (including blood markings, ritual blows, and intoxicating libations), the role of brujos as healers and conjurors, nocturnal sacrificial dances and possession ceremonies, and the syncretic veneration of figures given Catholic names. It also describes love philters, lodestone rituals, and how such practices have at times produced violent acts and legal suppression.
