About This Book
The narrative follows Allynne Markworth, an attractive, enigmatic man who survives by his wits in fashionable society, and his friend Tom Hartshorne, who persuades him to spend a week at the country house to enliven household tedium and pursue a young governess. Set amid clubs, billiard-rooms, and dinner-parties, the story traces social manoeuvring, gambling, flirtation, and small deceptions as Markworth uses charm and skill to navigate obligations and temptations. Recurring themes include appearance versus reality, moral ambiguity in social climbing, and the precariousness of a life built on cleverness.
