About This Book
This collection presents five historical studies of armed resistance and autonomous black communities in the Atlantic world. Two chapters portray Maroon societies in Jamaica and Surinam, describing their landscapes, subsistence practices, social organization, and long-standing independence. Three chapters reconstruct plots and uprisings by enslaved people, outlining how conspiracies formed, how authorities responded, and the immediate legal and social repercussions. An appendix lists the authorities and primary sources that inform the narratives.
