Big Stupe

A survey crew lands on a desert world to locate rare ores and stages an elaborate ceremony in which the ship’s psychologist poses as a magnificent leader to impress the tribal people. A large, gullible native animal becomes an object of comic attention and an accidental cultural mediator as crewmen alternate between calculated displays of authority and embarrassed amusement. The narrative follows their awkward diplomacy, practical jokes, and the creature’s clumsy antics, showing how staged psychological control collides with unpredictable local responses and, despite the mismatches, leads to a tentative cooperative exchange in which the natives offer assistance.
